Alternative medicine may ease symptoms of breast cancer treatment

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have been flocking to alternative methods while undergoing standard procedures as a way to further combat the problem head on.

Although most women do go the traditional route of either radiation or chemotherapy, a reported 4 in 10 women also look to other options to try and deal with the side-effects that come along with the procedures.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) found that alternative methods like yoga and acupuncture can help with common problems associated with the illness.

A study conducted by the University of Texas in 2006 showed that women who did yoga during their treatments were able to do daily tasks much easier, as well as sleep better and maintain a more positive attitude.

Acupuncture has been found to help reduce hot flashes from the anti-cancer medicine Tamoxifen, which according to the National Cancer Institution is taken by about half of women with breast cancer. It also helps to reduce fatigue, stress and nausea commonly associated with traditional treatments.

As one in eight women are predicted to be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes, the need for additional research and help to aid those in the process has become more important than ever.
