Breast cancer isn't the largest threat to the lives of women in the United States

Approximately 40,000 women die each year in the United States from breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Despite this alarming number, breast cancer is not the leading cause of death among women.

In breast cancer health news, the American Heart Association reports that while one in 30 female deaths in 2007 were from breast cancer, heart disease was the cause of one in three. "A woman's heart is her major health threat," Emory University cardiologist Dr. Nanette Wenger told the associated Press, "and everyone who takes care of a woman has to realize that."

Heart disease is also the leading cause of death among men in the United States. However, women have the added risk of coronary microvascular disease that most men don't need to be concerned with. This condition involves small blood vessels becoming damaged, and they eventually can spasm or squeeze shut.

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 25.8 percent of all female deaths in 2006 were a result of heart disease. All types of cancer combined to come in second at 22 percent. Heart disease is the leading cause of Caucasian, Hispanic and African-American female deaths, while cancer leads Native American and Asian deaths.
