U.S. National Cancer Institute to team with 5 Latin American countries to study breast cancer

The U.S. National Cancer Institute will be working together with the health ministries in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in order to research breast cancer in Latin American countries, according to BioScience Technology.

The U.S.-Latin American Cancer Research Network (US-LACRN) aims to study 3,000 women in the second and third stages of breast cancer.

The facilities will consist of laboratories throughout Latin America, including at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.

The aim is to discover "a better understanding of cancer incidence and mortality in the diverse populations that make up Latin America," according to the U.S.-LACRN.

In the U.S., the incidence of breast cancer is about one in every eight women, according to BreastCancer.org.

However, if women are unaware of the dangers and prevalence rates of breast cancer, they are less likely to seek out regular breast exams and mammograms. Raising awareness while researching ways to cure the disease are efforts that must be simultaneously pursued in order to effectively combat breast cancer.
