British government and Gates Foundation donate $1 billion each

The British government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are each pledging substantial funding to support efforts related to children's vaccinations in developing countries, according to a new report from CNN.

The Gates Foundation is pledging $1 billion, while the British government has donated $1.32 billion in addition to past funds.

Bill Gates had the following to say about the new commitment: "It's not every day you give away a billion dollars, but for a cause like this, it's exciting to be doing this."

David Cameron, the prime minister of Britain, announced the new pledge at a recent conference in London, which Gates also attended.

"In addition to our existing support for Gavi [Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization], we will provide £814 million of new funding up to 2015. This will help vaccinate over 80 million children and save 1.4 million lives."

The Gates Foundation has been involved in other humanitarian and research initiatives this year. The group recently donated about $27 million to wheat research for developing countries, according to the Cornell Sun.
