Conference in Nebraska to focus on global water and food security

The Water for Food Conference will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska from May 1 to 4 with the theme "Paths to Solutions." The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the hosts of the conference, along with the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska.

The CEO of the Gates Foundation, Jeff Raikes, as well as the principal officer of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Water, Pasquale Steduto, are scheduled to speak.

"This conference attracts experts from across Nebraska and around the world who are committed to developing solutions to one of mankind's great challenges - how to feed a rapidly growing global population with finite amounts of land and water," said James B. Milliken, the president of the University of Nebraska.

The 2010 conference was attended by more than 300 people from academia, industry, government and agriculture. This year, registrants from more than 20 countries have already signed up.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently pledged $40 million, along with the British government, in an effort to fight food security problems throughout the world by means of increased research.
