Humanitarian help in Darfur the aim of new joint project

The United Nations and the African Union have formed a joint effort to bring humanitarian aid to Darfur, Sudan.

"Operation Spring Basket" will last for three weeks and will consist of increased humanitarian aid to remote areas that have so far been hard to access.

“One of the foremost priorities for UNAMID is facilitating safe and free access for humanitarian agencies and NGOs [non-governmental organizations] into areas that are suffering from conflict and difficult to reach because of it,” said Ibrahim Gambari, who heads the UNAMID.

A civil war was waged in Darfur between 1983 to 2005, according to the CIA World Factbook. Between 5.3 to 6.2 million people were displaced as a result. Sudan has a population of about 45 million, with a median age of only 18.5 years.

The UNAMID has been in the region since 2008, aiding in humanitarian efforts.
