La Niña weather causing major food security problems in Uganda

Lack of water and food security continues to plague thousands of people in Uganda, exacerbated by the dry weather conditions caused by La Niña, according to IRIN News.

La Niña is the opposite of El Niño and involves the accumulation of cooler than normal sea-surface or sub-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Uganda consists of 112 districts and at least 36 of those areas are in danger of severe food security shortfalls.

A drought also affects electricity as water levels in the Nile and nearby streams decrease.

"We pray the rains come early and remain normal so that we can harvest something good from the first season of March-July," James Onyut, a resident of the Agago District, told the news source.

Conditions that bring La Niña can occur every few years and last for up to two years at a time, according to NOAA.

The median age in Uganda is 15.1 years and life expectancy is about 53 years, according to the CIA Factbook. Thirty-five percent of the population lives below the poverty level.
