Science and tech required for food security, says DuPont

Craig F. Binetti, President of DuPont Nutrition and Health, addressed food security needs and the requirements for new science and technology at the 2011 Gulfood Exhibition and Conference in Dubai.

“DuPont is uniquely positioned to increase global food production across the value chain. The Middle East is a key developing market with increasing emphasis on the food industry,” said Eser Acarkan, DuPont food industry leader for Turkey, the Middle East and Africa.

DuPont has several ongoing projects directed at food security.

The Pioneer Hi-Bred looks to increase crop yields through plant genetics. The DuPont Crop Protection program provides herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. The DuPont Qualicon works with food security concerns including safety diagnostic technology.

"What works in Brazil may not work in Dubai. Increasing food production and providing more and better foods locally will be imperative to helping address the world's food challenges," said President Binetti.

DuPont was founded in 1802 and now operates in about 90 countries, in the sectors of agriculture, nutrition, electronics, communications, home and construction, tranportation and apparel, among others, according to the company's website.
