World governments petitioned by 3 million people to end world hunger

World governments on Tuesday received a petition bearing the signatures of over 3 million people calling for an end to world hunger, surpassing an initial goal of 1 million.

"People from all over the globe are demanding change, urging political leaders to take action and to tackle the root causes of hunger and food insecurity," said FAO director Jacques Diouf, adding that "defeating hunger is a realistic goal for our time, as long as lasting political, economic, financial and technical solutions are adopted."

The petition, which asks government leaders to prioritize anti-hunger efforts, was presented at a ceremony at the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome. The initiative was widely popularized through celebrities, political leaders, social media networks and the internet.

Now that the campaign has met its initial goal, Diouf said the movement can "enter into a new phase" which, according to the FAO website, will invite the public to get involved and "shine a spotlight on the anti-hunger initiatives that are working."
